Hugh Howard
Hugh served in the U. S. Army Air corps during World War II, as an Engineer and top gunner on a B 17 Bomber. On October 15, 1944, while on the 19th bombing mission over Germany his plane was shot down. He spent the next 7 months in four different POW camps in Germany. He was liberated by U.S. Forces on April 29, 1945. Hugh said he would never forget the prisoner of war experience. After World War II, he re-enlisted and was sent to Japan, Korea, Thailand and then to Vietnam. After that tour, He spent several more years in Europe. He retired after 30 years of Military service. Hugh has been an active member of the American Ex-Prisoners Of War Organization more than 20 years. He served as Chapter Commander for several years and as the Department of North Carolina in 1994-95. After he retired from the Air Force, He owned a Real Estate Business for 10 years. Starting in 1978, he has served as a member of the town board of Pikeville, NC and as Mayor Pro-tem the last 10 years. For the last 16 years, Hugh has been a member of the Financial Committee and the Bond Procurement Committee for the Eastern Municipal Power Agency that is made up of 51 Cities and Towns in Eastern Carolina that own their own Municipal Electric Systems. At the Present time He is serving his 30th year as an advisor and committee member of the "Charles B. Acock Birth Place State Historical Site" Charles B. Acock was a former Governor of North Carolina.
